Gas Leaks

If you smell a gas leak, call 911 or the Milton Police Department at 850-983-5420. They will dispatch the correct gas department officials immediately.

Natural gas is a colorless, odorless gas that is lighter than air, so in the event of a leak, it will rise. To help detect leaks easily, a product called mercaptan is added to our gas to give it an odor similar to rotten eggs.

Signs of a Gas Leak

  • Gaseous or hydrocarbon odor
  • Blowing or hissing sound
  • Dust blowing from a hole in the ground
  • Continuous bubbling in wet or flooded areas
  • A spot of dead or discolored vegetation in an otherwise green area

If You Detect a Leak

  • Open windows and doors
  • If possible, eliminate any source of ignition
  • Leave the area immediately. Do not smoke, turn off/on any switches or appliances, or use a phone or cell phone.
  • Go to a safe location such as a neighbor's home and immediately call 911 or the Milton Police Department at 850-983-5420.
